Ethernet Switch Documentation

Mike Mooney sent this on to us, he got them from Jason Block

They are mostly for Equallogics, but the overall settings for iSCSI are similar for all Storage

Notes From Jason

Also note that the 8024Fs have been very buggy recently. If you notice that something isn’t working quite right, save the configuration and reload the switch. Most of the time, what wasn’t working will start working once the switch comes up fully. -.-

Note on firmware: If the switches you receive are at the 3.x firmware codebase, upgrade only to the latest 3.x firmware; which should be 3.1.4.16 for the 8024F. If you the switches arrive with the 4.x firmware, it is critical that you upgrade to the latest release; which should be 4.1.0.19. In either case ensure that you follow the PDF guide on upgrading the firmware when doing-so as they are changing things all the time. I still do not recommend freely upgrading to the 4.x codebase until the issues we’ve been seeing have been proven fixed. That said, the 4.1.0.19 release does represent significant progress in that area.

Note that the 4.x firmware codebase is much more similar to Cisco IOS than the 3.x releases, referring to gigabit interfaces as gi and 10GbE int erfaces as te while following the standard x/y/z interface naming convention. Where x is the switch number (always 1 unless stacked), y is the module number and z is the specific interface. For instance on an M8024 switch, the internal ports are te1/0/1-16 while the external ports are no longer 17-24 but instead are now te1/1/1-4 and te1/2/1-4 respectively for each module.
